Hamilton’s Dundurn Castle was built in 1935 by an architect named Robert Charles Wetherall and bought by Sir Allan Macnab in 1855. And did you know that it was the only place that had running water and electricity at that time?
The Queen Consort Is the Great Great Great Granddaughter of Sir Allan Macnab. If you ever did a tour of the halls of Dundurn Castle, then you know the grandeur that this place holds.
Tucked along the banks of Lake Ontario, Dundurn Castle boasts forty rooms. It was updated recently costing over three million dollars. The Castle is also known for weddings, and various other events.
The pillars that you see in front of the castle, were installed in 1855 for the marriage of Macnab’s daughter Sophia.
There was also an old aviary that was housed on the grounds as well but was moved in the early 2000’s.
I remember going to the museum on tours while I was in school, and it still looks and smells the exact same as I remember.
The garden that is located on the eastern side of the ridge, is used for the kitchen and whatever is left over is donated to local food banks.
They currently offer guided tours of the grounds for one hour and it costs fourteen dollars per person. The tours go in depth of the history of the castle, who owned it and when the City of Hamilton purchased it and the renovations that they have done.
If you have the chance to check this out I highly suggest going and learning about the history that surrounds you on a daily basis.
